Despite the fact that the humanitarian situation in the entire Somalia region was deteriorating this year due to outstanding crises exacerbated by the drought, which has affected many aspects of people’s lives such as farming and livestock, there were very few rains that fell and were received by communities in many different locations in south and central Somalia. In addition, Hirshabelle State and surrounding areas have been affected by the war against terrorism.
The Jowhar Regional Hospital has been fully operational for the last six months and provides both primary and secondary health care services to beneficiaries seeking medical treatment for their health problems, despite the hospital having a funding gap for the past six months.
However, for the difficult times while the drought exists mostly the public health diseases emerges and can spread but fortunately, the hospital is currently managing the cases treatment effectively at the hospital level.

1 - MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THIS PERIOD

Related to Medical Services:
Through the collaboration of health partners and SMoH during the reporting, it has been planned to undertake a measles campaign, which has been undertaken at fixed health facilities and outreach villages under Jowhar district.
Approximately more than 230 professional medical nurses from partners have successfully implemented the measles campaign, which has lasted for six days, reaching children at their shelters and vaccinating them. As Jowhar Regional Hospital, 22 medical nurses have taken part in this campaign, and the good thing is that we have been hosting the campaign for the whole day, and Jowhar Regional Hospital has also made a contribution of 15000 vitamin A and 8500 albendazole tablets to be provided as supplements to children who have been vaccinated against measles.

Related to the sustainability activity of JRRH
With the great support that Terre Solidali provides to Jowhar Regional Hospital, the management team has accomplished organizing an event that had the objective of cutting the rope on a rehabilitated shallow well and rehabilitating the meeting hall
This event was invited to the local authority and senior representatives from SMoH in Hirshabelle State, where the minister cut the rope for the significant work done by the management of Jowhar Regional Hospital.

2 - Capacity Building of staff

This year, Terre Solidali has organized a tele-medicine platform to conduct online medical course training and live discussions for hospital staff, including doctors, nurses, and midwives, to improve their skills for daily routine work, which was provided by professors from the University of Turin.
Fortunately, all hospital staff have welcomed this program and are getting more knowledge and experience that has improved their daily activities of the hospital.

3 - MAJOR CHALLENGES

  • The hospital’s main problem right now is a lack of drugs, as most of them have been used up in the past few months.
  • The hospital is facing a funding gap for staff incentives and other operating costs.

4 - Recommendation

Jowhar Regional Hospital is the only hospital in the Middle Shabelle region, receives a large number of patients and visitors from Jowhar and the neighboring areas, many of them are from rural residents, pregnant women, and outpatients. As a result, the hospital requires a great deal of assistance, as well as adequate medicine and medical equipment, such as beds.
